Network

TECHNOLOGY

Velocita Wireless' network utilizes Mobitex technology which is currently operating in more than 32 public/private networks in 23 countries with millions of users and Mobitex-enabled devices. Recent deployments in China, Korea and India clearly demonstrate the continuing worldwide acceptance that Mobitex technology enjoys for its proven capabilities in high-availability wireless data communications for text messaging, e-mail, telemetry, telematics, transactions and forms-based field force applications. Its ease of configuration and compatibility with existing technologies make it ideal for VPN scenarios.  And, since Mobitex and next generation networks are complementary technologies, Mobitex can address demanding market needs today and in the future.

OPERATIONS

Our network is housed in two highly secure, state-of-the-art collocation facilities.
We utilize IP-based switches that benefit from multiple redundancies:

  • Extensive power back up systems - uninterruptible power supply on AC or DC power, battery back-up, and on-site diesel generator back-up
  • Complete fire detection and suppression systems
  • Intra/Inter-switch - multiple layers of equipment redundancies and fail-over within each facility and between facilities
  • Telco - carrier diverse with multiple redundancies to each cell site.

FEATURES

  • Coverage blanketing 93% of U.S. business population in 363 metro areas, with 1500+ cell sites with an up-time of 99.99%
  • Easy provisioning and streamlined device certification
  • Best-in-industry battery life thanks to power-saving deep sleep mode
  • Guaranteed, instant, always-on network access
  • Rapid deployment and added coverage in less than 24 hours
  • Mobitex is an ideal network for customers whose requirements range from very small, niche applications to companies needing to monitor thousands of devices. This scalability allows us to serve a broad range of business needs
  • True push functionality allows host to initiate transmissions to remote devices without being requested, ideal for emergency situations requiring command-and-control resolution
  • Don't buy more pipe than you need. Unless you need broadband for large files, Mobitex's narrowband spectrum is perfectly suited to sending short bursts of data without having to compete with voice transmission
  • Network redundancy protects your data transmission regardless of interruptions to switches, base stations or transmission lines - every site has battery backup and telco redundancy
  • Mobitex is a proven technology. Scores of our customers have run applications on our network for over a decade

COVERAGE

Velocita Wireless operates a nationwide Mobitex data network, using FCC licensed spectrum in the 900 MHz SMR (Specialized Mobile Radio) band.

  • The Velocita licensed spectrum and associated devices are compatible with the mobitex network operated in Canada and roaming agreements are in place with the Canadian Mobitex operator
  • Velocita has licensed spectrum in 50 states and Puerto Rico, with active base stations that currently cover approximately 93% of the U.S. business population in 363 metro areas
  • 1500+ cell sites
  • Up-time of 99.99%

RECENT NETWORK ENHANCEMENTS

Deploying high qualilty networks requires a consistent investment of resources, both human and capital, to ensure that critical data delivery is both rapid and failsafe.  Over the past year, Velocita Wireless and now SkyTel have embarked on a multi-million dollar upgrade campaign.  The following improvements in capacity, speed and security by the Mobitex engineering team strengthen the foundation of our entire network architecture:

  • We have installed two new state-of-the-art backbone switching centers at highly secure locations to provide optimum traffic routing. These backbone switching centers replace the legacy Mobitex backbone tier with software-based IP switch architecture
  • These IP switches help all customers connect any IP based application directly into the network backbone with no restrictions
  • Full redundancy between data centers
  • New Mobitex Switching Nodes (MSN) switches have been designed to accommodate significant subscriber and traffic growth
  • MSNs are telco grade and configured with dual power supplies and dual processors mirrored hard drives
